Saponins Used as an Immunomodulator in Fish and Shrimp

The Aquaculture industry is rapidly developing and the growth is characterized by a process of intensification that causes disease due to high stocking densities, presence of multiple stress factors, complete dependability on commercial feeds and sub–optimal environmental conditions. These factors pose a major threat to the sustainability of the aquaculture industry, worldwide.

During the last decade, natural based in–feed compounds and formulations are being developed to prevent and treat fish and shrimp disease. Among these natural compounds, botanical extracts are showing a variety of beneficial immunological and metabolic characteristics.

We will review the potential benefits of Quillaja and Yucca Saponin blends as natural in–feed immune modulators in both fish and shrimp.
