This webinar will discuss the prevalence, characteristics, outcomes and management of Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome (HBS) in dairy cows. While relatively uncommon – 14% of dairy herds surveyed identified HBS as a problem – HBS is increasing in incidence and can result in fatalities of greater than 85%, making it a serious threat to dairy cow health and overall herd success. Characterized by an acute and sometimes massive hemorrhage in the small intestine, symptoms of HBS include depression, rumen stasis, a sudden decrease in milk production, colic, dehydration, dark feces and clotted blood in feces.

In this webinar, we will learn about the history of HBS and explore symptoms of the syndrome and how it impacts the dairy cow. We will cover potential causes of HBS, including the role Aspergillus fumagatus may play in incidence of HBS. And we will discuss the development and performance of OmniGen® nutritional specialty product in the face of HBS.

James D. Chapman, Ph.D. currently holds the position of Senior Research Leader of Collaborative Research and is responsible for the execution and coordination of ruminant research with Phibro Animal Health’s nutritional specialty products. Prior to this assignment Dr. Chapman served as the Director of Research and Technical Services and was responsible for the leadership and direction of the overall dairy nutritional specialty products research and product development programs and technical support activities both in the United States and internationally. Jim has worked in the private sector, as the technical development director for a start-up US-based company, as director of nutrition for a regional feed company and served on the faculty of a university in Texas in research and teaching capacities. Jim holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in animal science and animal physiology from Texas Tech University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Georgia in ruminant nutrition and physiology. Dr. Chapman has authored and co-authored more than 85 technical articles, peer-reviewed scientific publications and popular press articles and has served on the advisory board of several nutrition conferences and professional organizations.

Scott Bascom is a Dairy Technology Manager at Phibro Animal Health. He and his family live in the small town of Fulton which is located in south central Wisconsin. Has a PhD and Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. Some of his areas of expertise include: feeding and management of dairy cattle; ration formulation, formulation and development of milk replacers. Scott has been part of the Dairy Technical Team at Phibro since March 2015. His responsibilities include providing technical support for Phibro’s Dairy Nutritional Specialty Products. He works with customers, influencers, and end users insuring proper use of these products. In addition Scott provides product, marketing, and technical training for Phibro’s sales team and customers.
